West Ottawa Rotary Club Benefit Concert
Provides Music for African Aid Project

Benefit supports Anti-malaria Project in Tanzania

When the Rotary Club of West Ottawa makes the decision to support a cause, much consideration is given to the nature of the project before it is endorsed by the Club’s membership. The Club is well known for its many fundraising successes and this year’s 5th. annual Music for Humanity Benefit Concert is no exception.

The benefit will be held on April 9th at 7:30 in the evening. All proceeds will support the Anti-malaria Project in Tanzania, a joint project of a number of Canadian Rotary clubs The project aims to purchase 100,000 insecticide-treated bed nets to be distributed by local Rotary clubs in Tanzania free of charge, to orphanages, boarding schools, street children's homes , hospitals and prisons. Tanzania has a population of 38 million, and in 2003, over 11 million cases of malaria were registered, using 85% of the available health care resources.

Most African countries are receiving free nets from world charitable organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the Canadian Red Cross, but Tanzania has a policy of "No Free Nets" and many of their population cannot afford the high price set by their own Government and charged by local retailers. Through this project Rotary will purchase the nets.

Graduate music students from the University of Ottawa are donating their time and talent to make the concert possible. The benefit will be held at the First Unitarian Congregation, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa and will highlight the works of Ravel, Mozart, Brahms, Dvořák, and Tchaikovsky performed on the piano, violin, and cello, and includes voice. A reception will follow with refreshments.

Tickets are $15, or $10 for students and are available now by calling (613) 722-5357
