The Meeting
The Achihaei Team greeted us warmly as we came in the door, the Letts Team collected the lunch payments, and Cletus Peters was at the reception desk. President Jean called the meeting to order and asked Rod Holmes and Garth Hampson to lead us in the national anthem. Garth then led us in a sung grace written by former member Dan Crone, now deceased, to honour the spirit of the Christmas Season.

Cletus Peters greeted the many Member spouses and partners and introduced Debbie McCann and Nella Campagna (guests of President Jean); Marie Poste (guest of Linda Flynn); Doug Patriquin (guest of Rod Homes); Back Dang (guest of Sucha Mann); Miriam Fraser (guest of Keith Fraser); Bruce and Jenny Brook (guests of Doug and Joan Heyland); Judy Ginsberg and Felix Acevedo (guests of Vince Mazzola); and Doug Fettes (guest of Susan Diening). We welcomed them in song in our usual manner

President Jean now called for the Past Presidents Draw which this week was for 2 Indigo gift cards, one from the club and one donated by one of the visiting Scottish curlers who won it several weeks ago but realized it could not be used back in Scotland. Graeme Fraser stood in for Keith Fraser who had originally planned to replace Bill Morris and in due course found winners Miriam Fraser and Gaye Moffett.

Program
And it was now time to celebrate the warmth and conviviality that the music of the Christmas season evokes in all of us with stellar performances by our special guests and by our own homegrown talent.

Program leaders
Rod Holmes organized and led the Christmas Music Program. Rod was music director of the Orpheus Musical Theatre for more than 20 Broadway shows; director/producer at CBC/TV for 38years; and music director/organist at Kitchissippi ﴾formerly Kingsway﴿ United Church for 40 years. Guest accompanist Patricia Talbot started her career as church organist and choir pianist in South Africa and has been providing music at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church for the past decade.  Guest soloist Garth Hampson is well known as Ottawa’s favourite “singing Mountie” He has performed with the RCMP Band at Rideau Hall and at world fairs in Brisbane, Osaka and Vancouver. He has been our guest for this program for most of the past twenty years.

The singing
Rod welcomed our musical guests and brie/fed the 10 song leader teams to come to the microphone in turn to introduce their selections. We would follow using the song sheets on each table. Song leaders were Linda Flynn and Isabel Gilman, Blair Armstrong and Warren Creighton, Gaye Moffett and Don Butler helped by Garth who then followed solo with I Wonder as I Wander and Masters in The Hall. Then came carols led by Jean Begin and Clive Talbot and a keyboard duet by Rod Holmes and Patricia Talbot of Gesu Bambino. Joan Heyland followed with two favorites and Garth Hampson soloed O Holy Night and led us in a rousing O Come All Ye Faithful.

Meeting end
President Jean reminded us again that the next person we meet could be a potential Rotarian who might like what she or he sees if invited to a meeting. She then turned things back to Garth Hampson who asked us to stand and sing along in a loud and upbeat rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas to close this last meeting of 2016!

Corrigenda
Spinoff Dec 6 2016 understated and outright erred.  Claudette Léger-Paillé is in fact an interior designer and decorating consultant. It was not Claudette’s but rather Ginette Thomas’s grandchild who had misheard ‘Rotary’ as “rodeo” and was disappointed that there had been no horses.
