February 22, 2011
The Greenery was the forum for our post-Valentine’s Day, Rotary Club of West Ottawa weekly meeting which was enhanced by the return of a healthy Jack Sawyer. We were warmly greeted by Bill Morris, Bob Harrison and Joe Parkinson. George Chaiban efficiently managed the reception desk while Bill Morris sold PP Draw tickets until Blair Armstrong arrived to take over.
President Linda brought our meeting to order at 12:15 with the singing of O Canada. Dave Morton graciously asked the blessing and we enjoyed each other’s company over an excellent lunch.
Early Announcement
Hadi Mortada reminded us all of the Winter Outing arranged at Fulton’s Pancake House on Sat Feb 19 at 10am.
Introduction of Guests
George Chaiban introduced fellow Rotarian John Argue from the Yellowknife Rotary Club who was down in Ottawa for his mother’s 96th birthday! (John is seriously considering taking out a dual membership in RWOC!) Brett Brookish, a guest of Doug Heyland was then introduced by George. Finally, our guest speaker was acknowledged but will be formally introduced by Graeme. All were warmly welcomed with our Welcome Song!
Presentation of Paul Harris Fellow
Doug Rowlands shared a Rotary Foundation Moment with us and presented Brian Langill with his four sapphire Paul Harris pin.
Treasurers’ Mid-Term Report
Joe Wattie very capably reviewed our financial status from a detailed financial statement he had previously distributed to all tables. In round figures our income generating events netted the club as follows: Golf Tournament – $10,000: Mums Sales $19,000 and Cash Calendar $44,000. Alan Bowles complimented Joe on the new financial statement format.
General Announcements
-ShelterBox: Bob Harrison reviewed the PR component of the ShelterBox program, asking members to volunteer their services to be at the Shelter Box setups currently set up in Jason Yuan’s Electronic Stores.
-Valentine Dance Wrap-Up: Ken Murray announced that the Valentine Dance was well attended and a success. Valentine cookies made by Cindy Langill were so good that the surplus was sold off for $55, which was donated to RWOC coffers. Thanks, Cindy!
-President Linda reminded members that Bud Keenan would appreciate friends calling and visiting.
-Bill Robinson’s Call for Help! Sunday, February 20, 1-3pm:

· We would like approximately 15 volunteers representing a wide variety of clubs.
· We will also deliver cans of food collected at the Valentines party.
· We will meet in the parking lot behind the United Way at 363 Coventry Road at 12:30pm. The Kindness bus will take us to the Mission and return us to our cars when we're finished.
· Bill would like to make this a monthly event, with a different Ottawa area club running it each month. This is a low cost fellowship event that can make a significant impact on our community.
· Wednesday, February 23, 5:00-8:00pm
· Make a bus tour of six community houses (Pinecrest Terrace, Foster Farm, Morrison Gardens, Britannia Woods, Michele Heights and Winthrop Court) to thank kids for their Kindness Week projects.
· We would like 5-7 volunteers, at least representing the west end clubs.
· We will hand out toques, T-shirts and sandwiches provided by the United Way
· We will meet in the Ikea Mall at 4:30pm and take the Kindness bus on our tour. We will be delivered back to our cars when we've completed our tour.
Past President’s Draw
Blair Armstrong donated two prizes, a Red Blanket and a Florsheim Leather Wallet, which were won by Hadi Mortada and John Martin respectively. Thanks, Blair!
Happy Dollars
Bill Morris gamely and valiantly filled in for Jack (considering Jack was in the room!)
- Bud McGinnis appropriately kicked off Happy Dollars with 2 loonies and a $63 cheque to mark his and Gladys’s 63rd wedding anniversary! Congratulations Bud and Gladys!!
- George Chaiban brought greetings and some loonies from our old friend Brian Kelly who he met while curling in Almonte. Nice curling, George!
- Stu Picozzi wished Ed Balys a rapid recovery from his fractured tibia and fibula, sustained while skiing in Mt Tremblant. We all hope Ed is back on his feet soon!
- Ken Sparks celebrated his return from Central America with glowing reports of Alajuela (his home away from home) as well as trips to Chile and Argentina. Welcome back Ken and Anabelle!
- Keith Halpenny, our honoured Life Member, enjoyed a vigorous skate on the canal with no falls or broken bones! Way to go, Keith!
- Fred Christie tossed in a few loonies in honour of his son’s company (of which he is the President) achieving an award as the most outstanding commercial holding outside the USA. Like father, like son!
- Jack Sawyer celebrated his return to good health with some loonies and thanks and an admission that he missed us! We missed you too, Jack!
Music With Warren and Rod
A superb musical introduction to our speaker Mitch Geller to the tune of “I’ve been workin’ on the Railroad” was orchestrated by Warren and Rod and sung by us all. This was followed by an equally superb verbal introduction by Graeme Fraser who stickhandled around Dan Crone’s lyrics filling in the blanks very nicely.
Guest Speaker: Mitch Geller “My Coach and I”
Mitch Geller gave us a very humorous inside look at the Canadian diving world through the eyes of a participant, a coach and a manager. It is interesting that his first encounter with Rotary was attending a meeting with his Rotarian father-in-law wherein the guest speaker didn’t show up and Mitch was prevailed upon to take his place. He relearned Milton Freedman’s admonition that “There are no free lunches!”
Mitch had an unusual and fascinating coach by the name of Herb Flewwelling who believed that a coach should lift his athletes to higher achievements but went to great lengths to achieve success such as to avoid the “flat” landing:
-wrapping himself in foam only to become waterlogged and sink to the bottom!
-encasing himself in bubblewrap, externally good but internal organs kept going!
-diving into lower density liquids such as gasoline!
- inventing a bubble machine that created a cushion effect and worked well!
Canada is currently rated in the top three in diving behind only Russia and China. In the 2012 Olympics Canada currently has 6 medal hopefuls and Diving Canada would be happy to achieve 50% success!
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Mitch’s diving anecdotes and this was conveyed to Mitch in a very eloquent manner by a fellow coach in the field of basketball, Linas Pilypaitis.
