Well project at Luanda School in Kenya

Greeting us were Norm Thomas and Mike Traub. Doris Braslin s noted the visitors and guests, while Frank Cranton sold us Past Pres draw tickets. President Linda opened the meeting and, after O Canada, Barry Wetter said a thoughtful grace.

After Doris Braslins introduced guests: Richard Fisher, Jonathan Ledoux and Greg Mosgrove of RC Ottawa, Sahba Pulido, Brett Stott and Hope Chuchinnawat,

President Linda told us that Dr Ian Lee, our speaker, had to leave early and asked Andrew Young to introduce him.  Lee was educated in Ottawa, worked for a number of years in financial services in eastern Ontario before returning to Carleton University for postgraduate studies.  He is now on sabbatical from the Sprott School of Business where he is assistant professor. He teaches Strategic Management and International Business and has taught at schools around the world, has testified on policy before parliament and presented Op-Ed pieces in the press and broadcast media.   His presentation was clear and convincing in arguing that the some of the countries now using the Euro were headed for default on their debts and the best long term solution was for them to withdraw from the Euro zone. Following a round of Q & A, Brett Brooking expressed our thanks. The presentation is now on the club website.

Pres Linda then invited announcements:

Joan Heyland gave us a brief overview of the District Designated Fund component of The Rotary Foundation system. 20% of the DDF goes to District Simplified Grants, which are less than $1,500 and for projects to be completed within the year.   The remainder is used for District Matching Grants, which are longer term, require cooperation between clubs and require the applying clubs first to commit the money that the Grant will match.

Doug Rowland reminded us of the Foundation Walk, 14 May and asked us to sign up in the folders circulating.

Pres Linda told us about the success of Race Night, 14 April and gave a President’s Rose to organizer Blair Armstrong.

Stu Picozzi reported on the Hunt Club clean up. Nine members had participated joined by friends and a partner.

Bob Harrison reported that the New Zealand/Japan earthquake fundraising had brought in $1,715 of which $1,175 had gone to ShelterBox,   $50 to the Red Cross and $490 to The Rotary Foundation Japan Disaster Recovery fund. He thanked PC Cyber for their fundraising initiative, which had helped RCWO pay for two additional ShelterBoxes. Bea Osome had passed to Bob five letters of thanks written by Luanda school pupils in western Kenya for the well and pump, which club support had made possible. Cletus Peters, George Grande, Carol Waters, Doug Rowlands and Don Butler each read one letter, and then circulated them.

John Martin told us about the Orchid Society Show at the Nepean Sportsplex this weekend.

Graeme Fraser asked us to fill out the questionnaire he would be circulating asking about our interests to help him plan for the next Rotary Year.

Doug Heyland told us we were all members of the 2012 calendar team and would be starting by selling $100 ads.

Pres Linda told us Hadi Mortada was getting better would probably be joining us again next week. She reminded us again that ads were still available on the website to help underwrite the web costs.

Frank Cranton had members draw winning tickets for the two potted plants, which were this week’s PP Draw prizes.

Alf Bhanji’s induction as a member had been planned for today but he was absent with his wife who had just had their child so Pres Linda told us the induction would take place next week.
