Bea Osome --  Well project at Luanda School in Kenya

Greeters:  Ken Murray / Suan Cross    Grace:  Suren Gupta

Reception: tba     PP Draw:  Keith Halpenny    Spinoff:  tba

The Greenery hosted our first meeting in May where we were warmly greeted by Andrew Young and Ken Murray. Jack Troughton welcomed our guests, recording their visit for our archives. Suren Gupta sold us raffle tickets for the Past President’s draw for a unique prize, a large Brie cheese.

Since the previous day was the Canadian Election, President Linda allowed a little extra time for us all to rehash what happened in our respective ridings and whether we were involved in the “Blue Tide” or the “Orange Crush” or the “Red Demise” This lively discussion was held over a particularly tasty buffet of whitefish and rice with a tasty array of salads and desserts. Overheard at my table, populated by 4 of our members of the fairer sex, “Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reasons!” From the adjacent table: “I never vote for the best candidate, I always vote for the one that will do the least harm!” and from the Head Table, “Fuddle Duddle”

At 12:30 President Linda called us to order to sing O Canada and those of us who didn’t lose our vote sang with gusto while those members who lost their vote sang with even greater gusto in an attempt to shore up their confidence in the country, the stock market having fallen 242 points! Rocco Disipio then elevated our spirits with a Grace we could all relate to and be thankful for, following such a momentous election day.

The Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre, Ottawa, by Glenn Barnes

Our speaker was very ably and nicely introduced by our past president Joan Heyland.

Glenn Barnes, the President and CEO of the Dave Smith Addiction Centre, began by thanking our club for our donation to the “stop smoking” campaign, as nicotine is usually the first adolescent addiction.

He went on to describe the type of addicted adolescents the centre deals with:

-Age of first drug use 11-14 years

-Polysubstance abuse

-Often associated mental health disorders

-frequently sexual trauma history

- Usually legal issues, school evictions, homelessness, Children’s Aid conflicts

The adolescent community requiring the centre’s care in the Ottawa area is about 350 per year but the centre can accommodate only 90-110 per year. Hence the acute need for a larger, more comprehensive Adolescent Treatment Addiction Centre.

Site of Proposed Centre

Opposite ScotiaBank Place on 25 acres of land in the process of being purchased from Royal Ottawa Hospital. This allows an agricultural zoning. The design is very practical with a central larger unit and two smaller units, one for boys and one for girls also divided into younger and older units.

Operation

Currently Ontario government funds 14 beds for boys and 10 for girls.  Operating budget is 3.4 million with 55 staff. Capital budget committed by United Way is 1.8 million. Fund raising target is 6.5 million for a 40-bed unit by 2014.

Graham Fraser graciously thanked our speaker Glenn Barnes on behalf of the club members for a very informative talk as well as thanking him for his tremendous contributions to the adolescent health needs of Ottawa adolescents.
