Greeting us were Doug Heyland and Dougie Pritchard while Bill Morris and Nigel Lever conducted respectively
Reception and the Past Presidents Draw. In Pres. Linda’s absence P-E Graeme Fraser opened and ran the meeting,
despite a malfunctioning microphone. Alan Bowles said grace.
Our Guests:
Bill Morris introduced our guests: our speaker, Ted Silver of the Jewel radio station; Mary Wattie, wife of Joe Wattie;
and Alf Banji, a guest of Fred Christie.
Announcements:
· Susan Goddard commenced our annual process to solicit nominations for awards. Each week they will be the
subject of announcements. Forms will be available. Nominations are due by the end of March.
· Graeme Fraser announced that Bud Keenan is now at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, Rm 324
· Joan Heyland is looking for billets for two Rotaractors for Friday March 11 and Saturday March 12. Contact Joan
if you can help.
· John Martin read a letter from former exchange student Jayne Seagrave who was scheduled to speak to the
Rotary Club of Scarborough in England.
· Dave Morton reported on RC Ottawa-Stittsville’s Trivia Night. Our team placed second out of nineteen, our
best-ever result. Congratulations team!
· Alan Bowles reported on the Kindness Bus that the United Way and Rotary used to visit five west-end
communities, the children of which had performed various acts of kindness during Kindness Week. He and Dougie
Pritchard were among those who travelled with the bus. They thank participants and handed out gifts and
refreshments.
Club Vote:
Graeme Fraser called upon Mark Sherboneau to speak to a recommendation from our New Members Committee. It
had recommended that our Club apply to RI to be pilot project for having a new membership category, that of
corporate membership. The official representative of the corporate member could have specified alternates attend
club meetings in his or her absence. Mark fielded several questions but details of the membership category will be
worked out if and when RI accepts our Club as a pilot project. Graeme called for a vote by show of hands which was
overwhelmingly affirmative, there being just two votes against. Carried.
President’s Announcements:
In the absence of the usual Power Point announcements Graeme Fraser reminded us of two items:
· The District Assembly on Saturday, May 7. Contact Graeme if you want to attend.
· The Presidents Walk (for The Rotary Foundation) on Saturday, May 14.
PP Draw:
Nigel Lever gave two smoke detectors to Ken Murray, winner of the Past Presidents’ Draw.
Happy Dollars:
We were sad that Happy Dollars were cancelled owing to time pressures.
Our Speaker:
Following a musical welcome Clive Talbot introduced our speaker, Ted Silver of the program department of The
Jewel 98.5 fm radio station. Ted first became interested in radio while still at school where he was a private
broadcaster. The station aims at the over-forty demographic. As a part of the Ottawa community it needs news items,
announcements, etc. of interest to its target audience. The station has a promotion department and will entertain
partnerships on certain activities. These capabilities should be an opportunity for service clubs to get the word out
about what they do. Keith Halpenny presented Ted with a Rotary mug while thanking him for his advice and
interesting insight into the industry.
In closing the meeting Graeme offered his own thought for the week:
"If a parsley farmer is sued can they garnish(ee) his wages." Groan.
