Community Service Committee
Serving our neighbours in practical, hands on ways. Turning Rotary ideals into local action.
Who we are
The Community Service Committee helps the Rotary Club of West Ottawa identify and respond to needs close to home. We focus on projects that improve quality of life for individuals and families in our local community, especially those facing food insecurity, housing challenges, isolation, and financial stress.
Our members work with community partners, listen to front line organizations, and bring forward practical ideas that match our club’s skills and resources with real needs in Ottawa.
What we do
Community Service translates Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” into concrete support for our neighbours. This can include:
- Supporting local food banks and meal programs.
- Helping community organizations deliver services to vulnerable residents.
- Organizing hands on volunteer projects for Rotarians and friends of Rotary.
- Providing targeted financial support where a modest grant can make a large difference.
- Collaborating with other Rotary committees on projects that overlap with youth, literacy, or international work.
How we choose projects
The Community Service Committee reviews requests and ideas throughout the year. When we consider a new project, we look at:
- Alignment with Rotary’s areas of focus, especially Community and Economic Development and Basic Education and Literacy.
- Evidence that the project meets a real need in our local community.
- Opportunities for hands on involvement by club members, not only financial support.
- Potential for ongoing partnership rather than one time support.
- Available budget and volunteer capacity.
Recommendations are brought to the Board of Directors for approval according to club policies and foundation guidelines.
Current and recent projects
Here are examples of the kinds of initiatives our Community Service Committee has supported.

Housing and community supports
- Collaboration with local housing and support agencies to improve comfort, safety, or accessibility for residents.
- Targeted contributions to help partner organizations complete specific projects such as repairs, equipment, or small capital needs.
Education, literacy, and inclusion
- Projects that help children and families access books, learning tools, or after school programs.
- Support for community based organizations that foster inclusion, belonging, and mental well being.
